"Hairspray"

 

"Hairspray" is a musical comedy film released in 1988, directed by John Waters. It stars Ricki Lake, Divine, Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono, and Jerry Stiller, among others. The film is known for its campy style and social commentary, addressing issues of racism and body image.

Set in 1962 Baltimore, the story follows Tracy Turnblad, an overweight teenager with big dreams of dancing on a local TV dance program called "The Corny Collins Show." Despite facing discrimination and ridicule because of her size, Tracy's infectious optimism and talent eventually land her a spot on the show. Along the way, she becomes an advocate for racial integration on the program, sparking a movement for equality.

"Hairspray" is notable for its energetic musical numbers and colorful characters, including Tracy's eccentric mother Edna, played by Divine in drag. The film received positive reviews for its fun-loving spirit and social messages, and it has since been adapted into a successful Broadway musical and a 2007 film adaptation starring Nikki Blonsky, John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Christopher Walken.
